Instructions and Form for Hazardous Waste Generators, Transporters and Treatment, Storage and Disposal Facilities to Obtain an EPA Identification Number (EPA Form 8700-12/Site Identification Form)
Federal EPA ID numbers are issued to handlers of RCRA (federal) hazardous waste. If you or your business generates more than 100 kilograms of RCRA hazardous waste and/or more than 1 kilogram of RCRA acutely hazardous waste per month, you will need to obtain a federal EPA ID number.
The Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) regulations establish basic hazardous waste management standards for persons who produce hazardous waste, called hazardous waste generators. These standards are found in title 40 of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR) in part 262.
Small Quantity Generators (SQGs) generate more than 100 kilograms, but less than 1,000 kilograms of hazardous waste per month. Major requirements for SQGs include: SQGs may accumulate hazardous waste on-site for 180 days without a permit (or 270 days if shipping a distance greater than 200 miles).
Very small quantity generators of hazardous waste are not required by federal EPA to obtain an EPA ID number or submit a notification form, but may be subject to state-specific reporting requirements. All generators should consult with their state agencies to clarify the specific reporting requirements for that state.
Any quantity of acutely or ex- tremely hazardous waste must be removed in 90 days (Title 22, CCR, section 66262.34(d)).
The three possible generator categories are Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generator (CESQG), Small Quantity Generator (SQG) and Large Quantity Generator (LQG).
EPAs regulations in the Code of Federal Regulations (40 CFR) define four hazardous waste characteristic properties: ignitability, corrosivity, reactivity, or toxicity (see 40 CFR 261.21- 261.24).
SQGs are only allowed to generate up to 1 kg (2.2 pounds) on site in one calendar month and/or accumulate up to 1 kg on site for up to 180 days.
SQGs are only allowed to generate up to 1 kg (2.2 pounds) on site in one calendar month and/or accumulate up to 1 kg on site for up to 180 days.
