Do you have to consolidate loans for PSLF? PSLF consolidation is only a requirement if it makes your federal loans eligible for an income-driven repayment plan. This has been the case for federal family education loans and Perkins loans.
How about consolidation loans? If youve refinanced your private and federal loans into a single one from a private lender, it is private and thus ineligible for forgiveness.
Student loans can typically be consolidated once. But if you have older loans or borrowed new debt since consolidating, you may be able to do it a second time.
You can lose credit for your payments toward income-driven repayment (IDR) forgiveness. You dont have to consolidate all your federal student loans.
You Dont Have to Consolidate All Your Loans You can leave those loans out and maintain those benefits. For example, say you have Federal Perkins Loans and your work would qualify you for Perkins Loan cancellation benefits. In this case, you shouldnt include your Perkins Loans when you consolidate.
If you consolidate loans other than Direct Loans, consolidation may give you access to forgiveness options, such as income-driven repayment or Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF). If you consolidate, youll be able to switch any variable-rate loans you have to a fixed interest rate.
Generally, you cant consolidate an existing consolidation loan unless you include an additional eligible loan in the consolidation. Under certain circumstances, you may reconsolidate a single existing FFEL Consolidation Loan without including any additional loans.
PSLF consolidation is only a requirement if it makes your federal loans eligible for an income-driven repayment plan. This has been the case for federal family education loans and Perkins loans. So while you might not have to consolidate loans for PSLF, it could still be beneficial.
Which types of federal student loans qualify for Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF)? A qualifying loan for PSLF is any non-defaulted loan received under the William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan (Direct Loan) Program.
What types of loans can be consolidated? Subsidized Federal Stafford Loans. Unsubsidized and Nonsubsidized Federal Stafford Loans. PLUS loans from the Federal Family Education Loan (FFEL) Program. Supplemental Loans for Students. Federal Perkins Loans. Nursing Student Loans. Nurse Faculty Loans.
