Metal zippers can be shortened by removing the metal teeth so that you can cut the extra length before sewing into your garment. Once you get the length right you dont have to worry about breaking needles when sewing across the zipper.
CONCEAL is an invisible zipper where you can not see the element. It does not disturb the garments design so it is best suited for dresses and skirts. Also, the CONCEAL open-end zipper can also hide the open parts so it is recommended for the jacket where the open-parts need to be hidden.
Sewing an invisible zipper requires the use of a specialized presser foot. Your home sewing machine may not be equipped with one which will require you to buy it individually.
The three main types are Nylon Coil, Vislon (also known as Molded Tooth) and Metal zippers.
The main difference between an invisible zipper vs regular zipper is the visibility. When sewn in correctly, the invisible zipper is completely concealed as the zipper teeth are on the underside of the zipper. A regular zipper has the teeth on the top of the zipper tape and so are visible when sewn in.
most invisible zippers are made of nylon coil teeth, therefore its fairly easy to cut them, however I wouldnt use your best dressmaking scissors for this job as it will blunt them.
If you want to shorten a zipper by machine, youll have the best luck with invisible zippers, and closed end zippers made of nylon. For metal zippers or separating zippers, youll do better with tools. Measure the length you need for your zipper and mark the zipper with a fabric marker.
The invisible or concealed zip This is my favourite type of zip insertion as I think when its done well it looks so lovely and neat and really professional. Sometimes they are called invisible and sometimes concealed, these two terms can be used interchangeably.
CONCEAL Zippers Concealed (also known as hidden or invisible) zippers are coil zippers where you cannot see the elements because they are behind the tape. Normally, all that is seen is the slider. You might see this zipper in bags, pockets, formal wear, and other garments where a hidden seam is preferred.
