They have roots in calligraphy and evoke a feeling of warmth and personality, in contrast to geometrics and neo-grotesques which can feel cold and sterile. Humanist sans-serif fonts tend to pair well with Old Style serifs (sometimes referred to as humanist serifs).
In 1816, William Caslon IV designed the first sans serif typeface, Caslon, though at the time it was not widely accepted nor popularized. However, when modernism emerged at the turn of the century, ushering in the design concept of form following function, the sans serif exploded.
Humanist characteristics include proportions that were modeled on old style typefaces, open strokes and a slightly higher contrast in strokes in comparison to other sans-serif typefaces.
A sans serifor simply sansis a typeface designed without serifs (from sans, the French word for without). Typically, sans serif faces have lower stroke contrast and larger x-heights than serifs. There are many sub-genres of sans serif type.
The typefaces based on Humanist scripts were used alongside those based on Gothic scripts for decades indeed, centuries following the invention of printing, and eventually won out over types based on Textualis, becoming the standard typefaces in the West.
Humanist or Old Style is a historical classification for typefaces that draw inspiration from Roman lettering and the Carolingian minuscule (a standardized form of calligraphy) to include forms that reference the stroke of a pen. Nicolas Jenson printed the first books using a Humanist serif typeface.
The first typefaces that are considered humanist appeared following the invention of movable type. They were based on the handwriting of the medieval scribes of Italy, featuring softly rounded shapes, based upon a lighter, flowing script.
The geometric sans originated in Germany in the 1920s. Two early efforts in designing geometric types were made by Herbert Bayer and Jakob Erbar, who worked respectively on Universal Typeface (unreleased at the time but revived digitally as Architype Bayer) and Erbar ( c. 1925).
