txt files (plain text), . doc files (Microsoft Word documents), . jpg files (images) and . mp4 files (videos).
Mainframes (like the z/OS) support are two main file formats, Variable (V) and Fixed (F) format. Theyre often referred to as FB or VB (the B standing for Blocked, which is the most common way of organizing them on physical storage media). FB files, not surprisingly, have a fixed record length.
To cover separate content such as concepts, tasks, reference, the DITA standard specifies different information types. Each information type defines structured elements that aid in authoring the relevant content. For example, the task type defines elements such as , , , and .
Keys provide the means for indirect referencing in DITA. This can make it easier to manage and to reuse content. In DITA, keys are defined in maps and can then be reused and referenced throughout the whole structure of the map.
Data file formats usually come in two main varieties: Binary files - files that contain information in their binary format, usually supporting documents containing image or video data. Text-based files - containing text-based data and information, for documents that are primarily databases.
The three base DITA information types are concept, task and reference. What is a topic? A topic in DITA is an independent chunk of information covering a single idea or task, authored as a unit, and stored in its own file.
DITA map and topic documents are XML files. As with HTML, any images, video files, or other files that must appear in the output are inserted via reference. Any XML editor or even text editor can be used to write DITA content, depending on the level of support required while authoring.
Content created using DITA is in XML format, making it machine-readable. DITA content is componentized, arranged in topics and maps, and most commonly stored in a component content management system (CCMS).
