The IRS doesnt need to know your retirement account number so its not on their Form 1099-R. Your issuer might put your account number on it but there is no place for it on a 1099-R.
The account number is a unique reference number that can be used to differentiate multiple 1099-NEC Forms filed for the same recipient (for the same tax year). Lets say you have filed multiple 1099-NEC Forms for a recipient.
NOTE: If you do not want to use your Social Security Number in the future, you can apply for a Tax Identification Number (TIN). This number, once obtained, will appear on the 1099s you send out. A common misconception about Tax Identification Number (TIN) is that a separate Tax ID = incorporation.
A Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) is an identification number used by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) in the administration of tax laws. It is issued either by the Social Security Administration (SSA) or by the IRS.
For example, if a payees 1099 form is stolen from a mailbox, and masking is set ON, the payees full number is not displayed. Just the right 4 digits are displayed. The TIN is protected, but the recipient knows this is his number. This protects the recipient/payee from identity theft.
What is the Account Number on my 1099-K? The Account Number is the Merchant Number for your merchant account and is included to assist with your record keeping. The IRS is focused on the TIN from your tax return not your account number.
The account number is required if you have multiple accounts for a recipient for whom you are filing more than one Form 1099-MISC. The account number is also required if you check the FATCA filing requirement box.
Every Form 1099 includes the payers employer identification number (EIN) and the payees Social Security (or taxpayer-identification) number. The IRS matches nearly every 1099 form with the payees tax return.
