The Foreign Tax Identifying Number (TIN) serves as a unique identifier for individuals and entities engaged in foreign financial activities with Canada. It is a crucial component for accurate tax reporting and compliance with international tax treaties and agreements.
An ITIN provides a unique number to those who do not have or are not eligible for a Social Security Number. The IRS issues ITINs to individuals and foreign nationals whose income must be reported on a U.S. tax return but dont qualify for a SSN (SSNs are issued by the Social Security Administration).
Obtaining your foreign TIN Please contact the taxing authority or equivalent in your country of permanent residence to obtain a foreign TIN. You can also view a listing of domestic rules in select jurisdictions on the OCED (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) website. Visit the OCED site.
NOTE: If you do not want to use your Social Security Number in the future, you can apply for a Tax Identification Number (TIN). This number, once obtained, will appear on the 1099s you send out. A common misconception about Tax Identification Number (TIN) is that a separate Tax ID = incorporation.
An ITN is a 9-digit number issued to non-resident individuals who need an identification number. The ITN is for people who are not eligible for a social insurance number (SIN) and are considered a non-resident for tax purposes. If you are eligible for a SIN , you must apply for a SIN.
A foreign person that is an account holder of a financial account held at a U.S. office of a financial institution (including a U.S. branch of a foreign financial institution) must provide the Foreign Taxpayer Identification Number (FTIN) issued to it by its jurisdiction of tax residence.
For example, if a payees 1099 form is stolen from a mailbox, and masking is set ON, the payees full number is not displayed. Just the right 4 digits are displayed. The TIN is protected, but the recipient knows this is his number. This protects the recipient/payee from identity theft.
