In the references section in the ribbon, locate the Table of Contents group. Click the arrow next to the Table of Contents icon and select Custom Table of Contents. Select which levels of headings you would like to include in the table of contents. Click OK.
To write a table of contents, you first write the title or chapter names of your research paper in chronological order. Secondly, you write the subheadings or subtitles, if you have them in your paper. After that, you write the page numbers for the corresponding headings and subheadings.
TABLES MUST BE CLEARLY DELINIATED FROM THE TEXT. The title and description of tables are considered part of the table and must be clearly delineated from the text as well. Tables embedded into your document must fit on a single page. You can use smaller font size on tables, but it cannot be below 8 point size.
Basic tables of contents typically contain the names of the sections or chapters in the writing and the page numbers on which they are found. In MLA format, tables of contents should have broad section headings listed; however, these may vary depending on what is included in the writing.
