It is now illegal to sell or manufacture high-powered rifles like the AR-15 or AK-47 in Illinois. Those who already own assault weapons in the state can keep them, but theyre required to register them.
No. Illinois does not recognize concealed carry licenses from other states. However, a resident from another state who has a valid concealed carry license from their home state may carry a concealed firearm within a vehicle while traveling through Illinois.
The assault weapons ban, officially called the Protect Illinois Communities Act, passed after a mass shooting at the 2022 Fourth of July parade in suburban Highland Park. The law banned the sale of AR-15s and scores of other guns beginning in mid-January 2023.

The law, named the Protecting Illinois Communities Act (PICA), has banned the sale of hundreds of specific guns and types of guns since Gov. J.B. Pritzker signed it in early 2023. People who owned guns that Illinois now classifies as assault weapons prior to PICAs passage can keep them.
Exemptions PICA provides an exception for people to remain in continued possession of assault weapons they legally obtained and possessed before the assault weapons law went into effect if they comply with a set of requirements and limitations on public use and carry.
