The Lords Table (also known as the Altar or Communion Table) usually occupies a prominent place within a church, often being placed at the eastern end of the building.
By the fourth century, every Christian knew that during the celebration of Holy Communion, the altar was to be covered with a white linen cloth. Symbolically, the cloths represent the members of Christ, that is, the purity and the devotion of Gods Faithful. For the fine linens are the justification of the saints.
At the table of the word (the ambo or pulpit) the bread of Gods word is presented and broken to be our nourishment. Then the bread of the eucharist is presented and broken at the altar table for our nourishment. The scriptures were read at the beginning of the liturgy from earliest times.
Come Gods people, come to receive Christs heavenly food. This is the Lords table. to share this joyful feast.
The fair white linen historically covers all or part of the top of the table to provide a place for the elements that signifies purity. This can be as small as a white linen cloth, called a corporal, which can be sized to fit the elements in the form you use them.
The communion table with the plate, cup and pitcher, are constant reminders to Christians of Christs broken body and shed blood, a sacrifice for all humanity. Nothing else is placed on the communion table except the elements used in the observance of the Sacrament of the Lords Supper.
Reverence and Sanctity: The covering of the communion elements symbolizes the reverence and sanctity with which the body and blood of Christ are regarded. By veiling the bread and wine, the church emphasizes the sacred nature of these elements and underscores the solemnity of the Eucharistic celebration.
Covering the elements kept the flies off, and thereby showed respect for the Lords Supper and His body and blood. I think of how the bread in the tabernacle was covered when the Israelites went on the move, too.
