Answer and Explanation: Lennie has the dead mouse because it is soft, and he likes to pet soft things. The mouse was originally alive, but it bit him, so he killed it. However, he refuses to accept the mouse is gone, so he keeps it in his pocket.
George steals Carlson's pistol, and heads down to the brush by the Salinas River, where he first told Lennie to hide if any trouble arose.
I want you to come right here an' hide in the brush"(Steinbeck 15). In this quote George is telling Lennie to hide by the river if he should ever get into trouble again. This quote is the perfect example of foreshadowing because George is almost literally telling us that Lennie is going to get into trouble again.
Curley's wife finds him there, and tries to start a conversation. When Lennie touches her soft hair, she becomes frightened, and as he tries to keep her quiet, he accidentally kills her. Lennie runs back to the stream introduced in the first scene where George had told him to go in case of trouble.
One day Lennie was playing with the pup and the pup playfully bites him, but Lennie smacks his head just a little to hard and accidentally kills it. Lennie feels awful at first but then he is angry. He becomes angry because now he will not be able to tend to the rabbits.
In chapter 6, the last chapter of Of Mice and Men, Lennie has killed Curley's wife and run away to the place that George told him to meet him at if something bad happened. When Curley finds his wife dead, he gathers the other men to hunt down and kill Lennie.
A struggle ensues — Lennie panicking and Curley's wife's eyes "wild with terror" — until her body flops "like a fish" and then she is still. When Lennie realizes that she is dead, he panics and paws the hay to partially cover her.
“… And he shook her; and her body flopped like a fish” (91). This is when Lennie unintentionally kills Curley's wife, and the descriptions of Curley in the fight and Curley's wife as she is killed are exactly alike; they are both described as a flopping fish.
Lennie is by the deep pool of the Salinas River, waiting for George.
Lennie is alone inside the barn, stroking a dead puppy. Worried that George will find out and won't let him tend the rabbits, Lennie buries the dead pup in the hay and says that he will claim to have found it dead.
