The Gram stain is the most common differential stain used in microbiology. Differential stains use more than one dye. The unique cellular components of the bacteria will determine how they will react to the different dyes. The Gram stain procedure has been basically unchanged since it was first developed in 1884.
In general, how deeply a finish penetrated the wood depended more on the species of wood than on whether the finish was oil- or water-based, or listed as a film-forming or penetrating stain. For example, in lodgepole pine, deep was 3/8 inch; in cedar, deep was more than 1 1/4 inches.
Condition Your Boards Softwoods like cedar, pine or ash dont always absorb and can turn out blotchy. A wood conditioner will stabilize the wood and allow it to absorb the stain for a consistent golden glow.
Pine is a softwood and so reacts differently to wood stains than hardwoods do. Our Wood Stain is water-based and so when applied to Pine it soaks in and can raise the grain. This can cause the wood to feel slightly rough and look uneven, it is very easily solved though. Sand the wood using out #100 Sanding Pads.
Its due to the previous finishes and/or polishes, waxes, strippers, etcetera, which have soaked into the wood. It is rare for stripped woods to stain nicely. If you use gel stains or tinted topcoats (like the minwax polyshades) youll have better luck. You are stripping the old finish off right?
Sand pine wood first with 80-grit sandpaper followed by 150-grit sandpaper to level and smooth the surface. Apply pre-stain conditioner to the wood before staining it to prevent blotches, grain reversal, and other blemishes. Spread a gel stain onto the pine for the most consistent finish.
