Charles Zona (CZ): Hello, and welcome to another McCrone Group webinar. My name is Charles Zona, and today we are happy to welcome Doug Meier. Doug is going to talk to us about X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, otherwise known as XPS. Before we get started I would like to give you a bit of Dougamp;#39;s background. Doug is a senior research scientist with McCrone Associates. He specializes in surface sensitive spectroscopies, such as Auger electron, X-ray photoelectron, infrared reflection absorption, thermal desorption, and low-energy electron diffraction. Doug was awarded the U.S. Department of Commerceamp;#39;s Silver Medal for his work in the development of conductometric chemical microsensor array technology for the detection of chemical warfare agents. He also has over ten years of micro beam analysis experience prior to joining McCrone Associates. What insulation board can be left exposed?

Unlike other insulation materials, ECOCELL does not have to be covered with gypsum board. Leaving ECOCELL exposed is another reason ECOCELL is the cost effective solution for insulating basements and crawlspaces.

Which is better, XPS or polyiso?

Polyiso is unique in that the R-value increases with the thickness of the foam, so three inches of foil-faced Polyiso has a higher R-value per inch than two inches. The R-value of foiled-faced Polyiso insulation is between 20 to 38 percent higher per inch of thickness than the R-value of XPS.

Does foamular insulation need to be covered?

NOTE: FOAMULAR Boards in a conditioned space must be covered by a 15-minute thermal barrier, such as gypsum board. FOAMULAR Boards oriented vertically from top of basement floor to the sill plate with edges tightly butted.

Why does foamular need to be covered?

Owens Corning recommends covering FOAMULAR extruded polystyrene (XPS) rigid insulation as soon as possible following installation due to the potential for damage from ultra-violet light (UV). If FOAMULAR insulation is not covered immediately, it is recommended that it be covered within 60 days.

What foam board can be left exposed?

Dow Styrofoam and Owens Corning Foamular are two products that pass the burn test and can be left unprotected in an isolated crawlspace. Building codes restrict the use of unprotected foam in habitable or accessible spaces.

Can insulation foam board be exposed?

Generally, Halo Interra insulation installed on interior walls should be covered. However, as weve said before, a number of jurisdictions in the US allow exposed foam board insulation inside a building if theyve passed NFPA 286 testing.

Do I have to cover foam board insulation?

Most interior XPS boards must be covered with an accepted thermal barrier. Some XPS products have passed the NFPA 286 testing and dont require a thermal barrier; check with your manufacturer to see which XPS products are exempt.
