Most people who tear their ACL feel pain and a pop in their knee when the injury happens. Their knee usually gets swollen soon after the injury. After the swelling goes down, someone with an ACL tear usually can walk. But the knee may feel unstable and can give way and make the person stumble or fall.
Often, no. Right after injury, there is usually a lot of pain, swelling and lost range of motion. Athletes will most commonly use crutches to help walk in the days immediately following your ACL injury. But, typically you can walk with a torn ACL after the first few days upon injury.
A bad sprain can involve a small tear, but in most cases, it is only when the ligament has been stretched too far. ACL injuries are graded on a scale of one to three. Your doctor will determine the grade of injury you have following a physical examination and by using imaging tests such as X-rays or an MRI.
Many people hear a pop or feel a popping sensation in the knee when an ACL injury occurs. Your knee may swell, feel unstable and become too painful to bear weight.
For instance: ACL tears are often associated with a popping sound, immediate swelling, and a feeling of instability. MCL tears commonly cause knee pain and tenderness along the inner side of the knee. Meniscus tears may produce a popping sensation, locking or catching of the knee, and difficulty straightening the leg.
Some people can walk with a torn ACL. But dont force yourself to move or use your knee if it hurts. Visit a healthcare provider if you feel pain or have other knee injury symptoms. Putting more stress on your injured ACL can make a small tear worse.
Instability: ACL injuries can cause the knee joint to feel unstable or wobbly, as if it may give out from under you. This can make walking, running, or engaging in physical activity challenging.
A position that applies too much pressure on your affected leg will not only cause discomfort but can slow your healing. Patients healing from ACL surgery should sleep in a supine position, i.e. on their back instead of the stomach or side. Put a soft pillow beneath your leg to elevate it comfortably.
