Opened and closed emitter designs are the two ways that a red dot projects light from an LED or laser over its lens. Open emitter designs feature an LED or laser thats totally exposed to the outside world. In contrast, closed emitter designs completely enclose the source of their dot in a metal casing.
Most shooters find they can shoot more accurately with a red dot than with iron sights, particularly at distance and when speed is an issue. With the dot, you can easily holdover for longer shots, while still seeing the entire target in the window.
15-Yard Zero The 15-Yard zero distance is probably the best all-around for your pistols red dot sight. Zeroing your red dot sight at this distance is great for shooting at varying distance and offers more in terms of overall performance.
Not only that, but many holsters do not accommodate red dot sights. Luckily, all Vedder holsters are custom fit to your gun model and include options for accessories like red dot sights. You can check out our entire selection of IWB, OWB, and pocket Kydex concealed carry holsters here.
Benefits of an Enclosed Emitter Red Dot EEDs work great in conditions with mud, dirt, and water because the emitter cannot be obstructed by the elements. This keeps the dot projected on the glass right where you need it at all times. An open emitter may get some debris or material between the emitter and the lens.
At the same time, a larger window means the red dot is larger and may be harder to conceal depending on how what concealed carry position you use. Full-size handguns will naturally be able to support a larger window versus a compact handgun. I find a window of at least 0.6 by 0.9 is good for concealed carry.
Combining a red dot sight with a light source can be particularly beneficial in home-defense or tactical scenarios, where rapid target acquisition and accurate shot placement are crucial, even in low-light or dark environments.
Open Style Sights Open style red dot sights, also known as HUD or reflex sights, offer a greater field of view for target acquisition. A field of view is the peripheral area above and to either side of the sight picture. This makes them optimal for environments with fast moving targets such as skeet shooting.
