Normal anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) can be divided into three fiber bundlesi.e., anteromedial (AM), intermediate (IM), and posterolateral (PL) bundles.
The normal ACL should have a taut, low to intermediate signal intensity with continuous fibres in all planes and sequences. It courses parallel or steeper than the intercondylar line. The PL bundle usually has higher signal intensity than the AM bundle.
The anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) is one of the key ligaments that help stabilize the knee joint. The ACL connects the thighbone (femur) to the shinbone (tibia). Its most commonly torn during sports that involve sudden stops and changes in direction such as basketball, soccer, tennis and volleyball.
The ACL is one of four main ligaments in the knee that attach the thigh bone (femur) to the shin bone (tibia). The kneecap (patella) located in the front of the knee, protects the ACL and other knee ligaments. The ACL and another ligament called the posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) run through the center of the knee.
Direct ACL insertion is located anteriorly, on the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle. It is connected to a bone depression parallel and immediately posterior to the intercondylar lateral ridge and to the medial surface of the lateral femoral condyle.
The ACL arises from the anteromedial aspect of the intercondylar area on the tibial plateau and passes upwards and backwards to attach to the posteromedial aspect of the lateral femoral condyle. The ACL tibial footprint substantially overlaps the anterior root lateral meniscus footprint 6.
The ACL is a crucial element in stabilizing the knee joint. It primarily stabilizes the anterior tibial translation and plays a small role in resisting internal rotation and prevents any excessive movements.
The anterior cruciate ligament originates at the medial wall of the lateral femoral condyle and inserts into the middle of the intercondylar area. It contributes docHubly to the stabilization and kinematics of the knee joint.
