Three of the most common techniques used to obfuscate data are encryption, ization, and data masking. Encryption, ization, and data masking work in different ways. Encryption and ization are reversible in that the original values can be derived from the obfuscated data.
Secure Sensitive PII in a locked desk drawer, file cabinet, or similar locked enclosure when not in use. When using Sensitive PII, keep it in an area where access is controlled and limited to persons with an official need to know. Avoid faxing Sensitive PII, if at all possible.
To activate/deactivate the masking of PII data, select Utilities Data Unmask PII Data / Mask PII Data.
Personally Identifiable Information (PII) Masking requirements is part of privacy by design requirements. PII functionality is to restrict unauthorized access by the users to personal information of customer by masking the PII information.
Hashing. Although subject to some debate about its core efficacy, a hashing function is a common and well-accepted method for masking PII. Hashing is essentially a (theoretically) non-reversible encryption, where a one-time key is used to transform a piece of data into a complex, usually 256 digit, code.
