A torn ACL in dogs is one of the most common dog injuries. A torn ACL requires rest, immobilization, and sometimes surgery. It is entirely possible for a dog to recover from an ACL tear without surgery.
A clear symptom of a torn ACL in a dog is trouble with mobility although dogs experiencing minor ACL injuries can still walk to a degree. However, symptoms may range a bit depending on the severity of the injury and the individual dogs pain tolerance.
Brumett said dogs who have a cruciate ligament rupture yet dont have surgery, rehab, or bracing can develop some level of stability on their own in six to 12 months and these dogs are typically comfortable going on walks, running, or jumping. With a brace, a dog can be back out playing in just a few weeks.
Yes, its possible for a dog to recover from an ACL tear without surgery. Dogs without treatment or surgical intervention will adapt over time. Over the next few months after the injury, their body will begin to heal and adjust on its own.

The timeline for ACL sprain recovery can vary depending on the severity of the injury and individual factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to rehabilitation protocols. In general, it takes around 6 to 9 months to fully recover from an ACL sprain.
If left untreated, the lameness caused by a partially torn or ruptured CCL will improve or go away completely in many dogs, especially small ones, within three to six weeks.
