How is congestive heart failure diagnosed? Resting or exercise electrocardiogram (also known as EKG, ECG, or stress test) Echocardiogram. Computed tomography (CT) scan. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan. Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan. Biopsy or catheterization of the heart and arteries.
With congestive heart failure, the hearts capacity to pump blood cannot keep up with the bodys need. As the heart weakens, blood begins to back up and force liquid through the capillary walls. The term congestive refers to the resulting buildup of fluid in the ankles and feet, arms, lungs, and/or other organs.
General physical examination: The general appearance of patients with severe CHF or those with acutely decompensated HF includes anxiety, diaphoresis, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Patients with chronic decompensated HF can appear cachexic.
The fluid buildup can cause shortness of breath and swelling of the legs and feet. Poor blood flow may cause the skin to appear blue or gray. Depending on your skin color, these color changes may be harder or easier to see. Some types of heart failure can lead to an enlarged heart.
The hallmark of heart failure is dyspnea. The classic combination of raised jugular venous pressure (JVP), peripheral edema, palpable liver, basal crepitations, tachycardia, and a third heart sound is well known.
Patients may have isolated symptoms of left-sided HF, right-sided HF, or combined. General physical examination: The general appearance of patients with severe CHF or those with acutely decompensated HF includes anxiety, diaphoresis, tachycardia, and tachypnea.
Patients with HF require frequent monitoring of vital signs, including oxygen saturation. They may also require constant monitoring of the heart rate and rhythm via telemetry monitoring. Frequent assessment and monitoring for symptoms is also indicated. All patients with HF require daily weight monitoring.
A heart or circulatory condition can mean you look well even when you dont feel it.
