A person with a partial ACL tear may have knee pain, swelling, and joint instability but the degree of all three may depend on the extent of the tear and the individual patient. If the ACL is completely torn, there will be instability in the knee that will cause feelings of sudden shifting or buckling.
Symptoms of ACL Injuries Popping sound or sensation in the knee. Swelling and inflammation, usually occurring quickly after injury. Pain severity can vary depending on the extent of the injury. Reduced range of motion in the knee. Instability when placing weight on the affected leg. Inability to walk or continue activity.
Scar Tissue Formation The formation of scar tissue is a natural part of the healing process. After an ACL surgery, scar tissue forms within and around the knee joint. Unfortunately, the accumulation of this tissue limits the range of motion.
If nothing is done, the ACL injury may turn into chronic ACL deficiency. Your knee may become more and more unstable and may give out more often. The abnormal sliding within the knee also can hurt cartilage. It can trap and damage the menisci in the knee and can also lead to early osteoarthritis.
Signs and symptoms of ligamentous laxity tend to occur in or around the affected joints. Possible symptoms near your joints include: pain, numbness, or tingling. muscle spasms.
Mechanical symptoms such as locking, catching or clicking as you move or bend your knee. Twisting movements with a popping sensation. Frequent pain and an inability to straighten the knee.
Signs and symptoms of an ACL injury usually include: A loud pop or a popping sensation in the knee. Severe pain and inability to continue activity. Rapid swelling. Loss of range of motion. A feeling of instability or giving way with weight bearing.
Patients may experience a sensation of the knee giving way or buckling, especially during physical activities or movements that stress the ACL.
