Peeling usually occurs a few days after getting the tattoo, as the skin begins to heal and regenerate itself . The regeneration process involves the skin removing dead and damaged cells. As the skin exfoliates itself, a layer of dead skin cells and ink pigment peels off, allowing new cells to grow.
Needle depth in the skin is a major factor in lines falling out (not deep enough), blowing lines (too deep or too slow or both), scarring (TOO DEEP, ink falls out of these too) or in getting the perfect smooth lines everyone wants.
The key to covering up a black tattoo is to choose a color that will contrast well with the black ink. For example, lighter colors such as white, yellow, or light green will stand out against the darkness of the black ink. Darker colors, such as dark green or blue, can also work well for covering up a black tattoo.
Pooling can also happen if your needle hang is too short (less than 2mm) when the tip makes contact with the skin and drops a big puddle. Set your needle hang at 2-2.5mm to prevent this leaving the ability for pigment flow and precision. Hint: 2mm - 2.5mm is approximately the width of a dime or nickel.
Tattoo ink needs to be injected into the middle dermis layer of the skin to look sharp, beautiful, and long-lasting. Tattoos get overworked when the artist injects the ink too far into the skin, and underworked when the artist doesnt penetrate the skin enough. Either result can leave your tattoo looking unfinished.
Needle is set too far out for that viscosity ink. You notice that when you prepare to work the ink does not dribble out the end. As the needles move very fast up and down (in and out) the surface tension is broken and the ink flows. Thinner inks flow more freely and more easily.
A patchy tattoo could be the result of bad technique; if the artist hasnt made sure the ink is deep enough to stay put. It could also be due to them not packing the ink enough; certain ink colours, or areas of concentrated black, often need to be packed in quite a lot in order to create a solid area of colour.
