Press Alt+F9 to turn off field codes currently on the page. To turn off a field code for a specific field, click on the field and press Shift+F9 instead. Click the Office button and select Word Options to turn off field codes by default.
You build an index by marking text to include with a special field, called an index field {XE}. This field tells Word to include the marked text as an index entry.
What youre seeing are Words field codes that place the clickable URL hyperlinks in the paper. By default, Word is set up to show the actual clickable URL hyperlinks. If youre seeing the field codes instead, this means that the setting that controls this in Word accidentally got changed.
Delete an index entry and update the index Select the entire index entry field, including the braces ({}), and then press DELETE. To update the index, click the index, and then press F9. Or go to References Update Index.
Select the Advanced tab in the Word Options window. Scroll to the Show document content section. Deselect Show field codes instead of their values and click OK.
Simply press ALT+F9 to show the field codes of all fields in the document. You can then use find and replace to find specific text of the field code just like regular text. Open the Find menu and click Go To.
Press Alt+F9 to hide field codes. Do you see { TOC \o 1-3 \h } (or something similar) in place of the TOC? You can add the \h switch manually, if it isnt present. Press Alt+F9 again to hide field codes.
Turn the display of formatting marks on or off Go to Word Preferences View. Under Show Non-Printing Characters, select the check box for each formatting mark that you always want to display regardless if the Show/Hide. button is turned on or off. Clear any check boxes for ones you dont want always displayed.

Select the entire index entry field, including the braces ({}), and then press DELETE. If you dont see the XE fields, click Show/Hide Button image in the Paragraph group on the Home tab. To update the index, click the index, and then press F9. Or click Update Index in the Index group on the References tab.
