As the story begins, Lennie has a dead mouse in his pocket because he likes to pet soft things but doesnt know his own strength and accidentally killed the mouse when he pet it too hard.
He tells him to hide in a bush by the river where they stayed the night. George makes it a point to make Lennie understand this because he knows Lennie might get in trouble, and he doesnt want him to get hurt or killed.
George reminds Lennie that they are headed to a new ranch. He explains that it will be like the last ranch that they worked on in a town called Weed. George tells Lennie that when they go to the ranch tomorrow, Lennie has to let George do all the talking.
The author John Steinbeck has George tell Lennie to hide in the bushes near where they are camping in the first chapter. This will give George a head start on the lynch mob after Lennie kills Curleys wife.
