The theory behind impression management Our behavior in a given setting is based on three components: motives, self-presentation, and social context.
Impression management is all of the conscious and unconscious processes that we use to control how others perceive us. It involves actions that often cast us in a favorable light in order to achieve our goals. We all engage in purposeful and subconscious behaviors to manage the perceptions that others have of us.
There are three basic categories or types of impressions that may be deposited, detected, developed if need be and recovered at a crime scene. Latent. The skin has deposits of oil and perspiration that normally coat the surface. Patent. Plastic or Molded.
Types of impression management that are evidenced most often in day-to-day life are ingratiation, self-handicapping, and self-monitoring. Ingratiation is the process of getting in with someone by presenting all of ones best qualities, speaking highly about ones accomplishments, and/or flattering.
An impression is a clinical summation of information and/or an opinion formed, which is the outcome of the clinical assessment process. The Clinical Impression may lead to a statement of a Condition about a patient.
Self, social identity and social interaction The concept of self is important to the theory of impression management as the images people have of themselves shape and are shaped by social interactions.
