Myocardial infarction (MI) results in death for 300,000 to 400,000 people (see also Cardiac Arrest). Acute MI, along with unstable angina, is considered an acute coronary syndrome. Acute MI includes both nonST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) and ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI).
The medical term for heart attack is myocardial infarction or MI. Some types of myocardial infarctions, or heart attacks, are caused by a partially blocked coronary artery. A heart attack with a completely blocked coronary artery is called a STEMI. STEMI stands for ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction.
NSTEMI is caused by a block in a minor artery or a partial obstruction in a major artery. STEMI occurs when a ruptured plaque blocks a major artery completely.
This condition gets its name because unlike an ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI heart attack) it doesnt cause a very specific, recognizable change to your hearts electrical activity. Any heart attack, including an NSTEMI, is a life-threatening medical emergency and needs care immediately.
The traditional AMI classification sharply distinguishes ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) from non-ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) based on the presence or absence of persistent ST-segment elevation on the electrocardiogram (ECG).
The ECG findings of an acute anterior myocardial infarction wall include: ST segment elevation in the anterior leads (V3 and V4) at the J point and sometimes in the septal or lateral leads, depending on the extent of the MI. This ST segment elevation is concave downward and frequently overwhelms the T wave.
