[Applause] so the title of todayamp;#39;s presentation is whatamp;#39;s in a name and itamp;#39;s an interesting thing because when a writer is choosing names for a character or names for a place where theyamp;#39;ve set a story they have a really powerful opportunity to give you some subtle hints about what to expect and Stan Beck does this brilliantly enough nice and then itamp;#39;s probably not something you could write a whole essay about but you could certainly slip in some of the knowledge that you gain from this in a in an introduction maybe to an essay and pick up some good marks for it because itamp;#39;s thereamp;#39;s some fascinating stuff and it becomes more and more clear that there isnamp;#39;t a name in the novel that wasnamp;#39;t chosen very carefully so if we start with the title of mice and men wasnamp;#39;t the original title of the novel it was originally just called something that happened and for me that candor signals that thereamp;#39;s not

Curleys wife is never named in the novel, which reflects how she is not valued as a person. Her character demonstrates the negative attitude towards women that may have been held by men such as the ranchworkers at the time.
In chapter 3 of Of Mice and Men, George makes Lennie return a puppy he was hiding in his coat. Candy reluctantly allows Carlson to kill his dog because the dog smells. George, Lennie, and Candy discuss buying a farm together. Curley and Slim are angry with each other because Curley thinks Slim has been with his wife.
Curleys wife is usually referred to as a tramp, tart, or a looloo by the men on the ranch. In the story, her name isnt mentioned, instead called Curleys wife.
However, Slim only calls her Good-lookin stating to the reader that he also sees Curleys wife as a tart, as an object. Im tryin to find Curley, Slim. Well, you aint tryin very hard.
Curley: On the surface Curley is called Curley because his hair is curly. on a deeper level his nickname was also a description of his personality. Curly didnt have good control with his anger and he would lash out unpredictably, like a curl.
Curleys wife is not given a name, even though she is a pivotal character in Of Mice and Men. Her lack of a name adds to the notion that, as she is Curleys wife, she is his property. Curleys wife is objectified by everyone in the novel, as well as by the author.
Curleys wifes name is never revealed as a way of showing her lack of independence and identity while also displaying the role of women on a ranch in the 1930s.
In Of Mice and Men, John Steinbeck avoided giving Curleys wife a name because he saw her as a symbol of female sexuality that acted like a universal lightning rod to attract the violence of men. Look at how often Steinbeck describes her by the color red.
