An increased amount of aerosols may increase the CCN number concentration and lead to more, but smaller, cloud droplets for fixed liquid water content. This increases the albedo of the cloud, resulting in enhanced reflection and a cooling effect, termed the cloud albedo effect (Twomey 1977; Figure 3b).
Although most aerosols reflect sunlight, some also absorb it. An aerosols effect on light depends primarily on the composition and color of the particles. Broadly speaking, bright-colored or translucent particles tend to reflect radiation in all directions and back towards space.
Some aerosols from human pollution can change the size or lifetime of water droplets inside clouds. When water droplets become smaller, clouds reflect more sunlight. Overall, this has a cooling effect on the atmosphere. Similarly, some aerosols like dust can influence how ice particles form in colder clouds.
Atmospheric aerosols influence the climate directly by scattering and absorbing incoming solar radiation and indirectly by acting as cloud condensation nuclei and/or ice nuclei, therefore modifying the microphysics, radiative properties, and lifetime of clouds.
The word aerosol is used by scientists to mean atmospheric particulate. But it was used a lot by the media during the 1980s and 1990s to refer to the spray cans that released chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) into the air, which damage the ozone layer and created the ozone hole.
