Individuals with ASD often learn to use masking behaviors over time. They may become adept at looking at others when speaking to them, using scripted phrases during conversations, or mimicking others facial expressions, gestures, and mannerisms.
Masking can start at a very early age. Many autistic people realise even as young children that they are quite different from others. When others notice those differences, this can often lead to not being included in games, invited to parties, being asked to join in in any form.
Appearing overly rehearsed: If someone appears to be using rehearsed scripts or phrases in social situations, this could be a sign of masking. Lack of eye contact: While avoiding eye contact can also be a symptom of autism, it can also be a way for individuals to hide their true emotions and reactions.
Masking is a strategy used by some autistic people, consciously or unconsciously, to appear non-autistic in order to blend in and be more accepted in society. Masking can happen in formal situations such as at school or work and in informal situations such as at home with family or socialising with friends.
Effects of Masking. People on the Autism spectrum who engage in masking tend to display increased indicators of anxiety and depression. Masking consumes valuable inner resources that can leave people feeling exhausted. Additionally, it can hinder the development of authentic identities.
High-masking Autistic people possess an exceptional ability to observe and analyze social cues, meticulously studying how people move, talk, and interact. Its as if we have taken on the role of social detectives, mastering the art of fitting in.
Common Autistic Masking Symptoms Suppressing Stimming: This can include hiding repetitive behaviours. Mimicking Neurotypical Behaviour: Imitating the social interactions, gestures, and expressions of neurotypical people. Scripting Conversations: Preparing and rehearsing dialogues or responses for social interactions.
Typical examples of autistic masking include the suppression of stimming and reactions to sensory overload. To compensate difficulties in social interaction with neurotypical peers, autistic people might maintain eye contact despite discomfort or mirror the body language and tone of others.
