When obtaining permission from the copyright owner, it is important to be specific about your purpose. The permission letter should include: Date of request. Name of the author, web author, publisher or editor.

The five fundamental rights that the bill gives to copyright owners-the exclusive rights of reproduction, adaptation, publication, performance, and display-are stated generally in section 106.
Registering your copyright with the appropriate government agency is important in protecting your creation. With this registration, you have a public record of your ownership of the work.
For example, copyright does not protect factual information or data, titles, short word combinations, names, characters, slogans, themes, plots, or ideas.
U.S. copyright law provides copyright owners with the following exclusive rights: Reproduce the work in copies or phonorecords. Prepare derivative works based upon the work. Distribute copies or phonorecords of the work to the public by sale or other transfer of ownership or by rental, lease, or lending.
Perhaps the most straightforward and commonly used method to stop copyright infringement is to send a so-called Copyright Infringement Notice directly to the offending party.
