In written reports, titles are not used on figures or tables; instead, the information is placed in a caption. Captions for tables are placed above the table (typically left aligned), and captions for figures are placed below the figure.
A table caption can be used to provide a heading for the table as a hole. This is not required to meet WCAG 2.0, but is considered best practice because the element is explicitly associated with the table. The value should be a succinct description of the content of the table.
Select the object (table, equation, figure, or another object) that you want to add a caption to. On the References tab, in the Captions group, click Insert Caption. On the Captions dialog box, click AutoCaption, and then select the check boxes for the items that you want Word to automatically add captions to.
The tag must be inserted immediately after the tag. Tip: By default, a table caption will be center-aligned above a table. However, the CSS properties text-align and caption-side can be used to align and place the caption.
