A patients own tissue - an autograft - can often be used for a surgical reconstruction procedure. Allograft tissue, taken from another person, takes longer to incorporate into the recpients body .
Allograft: In this type of surgery, the surgeon replaces your torn ACL with a tendon graft from a donor. Yes, you read that right from a donor! Autograft: In contrast, an autograft involves taking tissue from your own body, usually from your hamstring tendon or patellar tendon, to reconstruct the ACL.
The graft is threaded across the knee, leaving a piece of bone in each of the tunnels and the patellar tendon in the position of the original ACL, thus reconstructing the ligament. The graft is then secured in this position, most commonly by wedging a screw between the side of the bone and the tunnel.
1, 2 Still, the most commonly used autografts for ACL reconstruction are the bone-patellar tendon-bone (BPTB) and hamstring tendons (HT). There is some evidence to suggest that BPTB autografts produce more pain than HT autografts both in the immediate postoperative period as well as in the long term.
Allografts provide another option for ACL reconstruction. The tissue is harvested from a cadaver, so there are no complications from taking the tissue from your own body. The most common choices are Achilles tendond, quadriceps, anterior tibialis tendon, and patellar tendon.
An allograft, where the replacement tendon comes from a cadaver, is three times more likely to retear than an autograft. This is true no matter your age. However, the difference in retear risk is docHub only for younger patients, especially those 22 and younger.
Additionally, there is no potential for outside disease transmission or rejection of the tendon. An autograft is also stronger than an allograft because of the sterilization process for donor tissue. An autograft is typically the recommended graft for patients younger than 40, but exceptions do exist.
