UML Visibility Public visibility is indicated by a + symbol. Classes or objects that have access to a public attribute or operation can read and write its value, and can invoke its behavior. Protected visibility is indicated by a # symbol. Private visibility is indicated by a - symbol.
To create an Actor (model element only) by Menu: Select an Element where a new Actor to be contained. Select Model | Add | Actor in Menu Bar or Add | Actor in Context Menu.
In addition the # symbol allows an operation, or attribute, to be defined as protected, while the ~ symbol indicates package visibility.
To show (or hide) visibilities: Select view elements in diagram. Press Ctrl+Shift+V or check (or uncheck) Format | Show Visibility in Menu Bar or Context Menu.
UML defines visibility as follows: A public element is visible to all elements that can access the contents of the namespace that owns it. A private element is only visible inside the namespace that owns it.
Attributes and operations can be added to classes and interfaces in a UML class diagram, and to associations by using association classes. Attributes can also be added to data types. Literals can be added to enumerations in a class diagram. New attributes, operations, and literals can be added in different ways.
