An Amazon Machine Image, or AMI, is a template for Amazon EC2 instances, created from an Amazon EC2 instance. AWS provides updated AMIs (with patches, for example) every month; however, AWS Managed Services (AMS) requires AMIs that have been modified for AMS use.
You can export most AMIs to Citrix Xen, Microsoft Hyper-V, or VMware vSphere. When you export an image, you are charged the standard Amazon S3 rates for the bucket where the exported VM is stored. In addition, there might be a small charge for the temporary use of an Amazon EBS snapshot. Resolution. If you know the account IDs of the AWS accounts that you want to share the AMI with, follow the instructions at Share an AMI with specific AWS accounts. Each AMI includes a template for the root volume required for a particular type of instance. A typical example might contain an operating system, an application server and applications.

You can deregister an AMI when you have finished using it. After you deregister an AMI, you cant use it to launch new instances. When you deregister an AMI, it doesnt affect any instances that youve already launched from the AMI or any snapshots created during the AMI creation process. Deregister AMIs and delete snapshots using the Amazon Management Console CLI To deregister an AMI, follow the steps below: Go to the AWS EC2 console and AMI section. Select the desired AMI. Next, select the Deregister option in the Actions tab.
