Thankfully, there is an easy way to instantly force Excel to add leading zeroes. All you need to do is append an apostrophe () at the beginning of every number. This will force Excel to display the number as it is.
Here is how to add leading zeroes using the TEXT function: If you have the numbers in column A (say from A2:A100), then select B2:B100 and enter the following formula: =TEXT(A2,00000) Press Control + Enter to apply the formula to all the selected cells.
The first digit in a ZIP code represents a defined group of U.S. states. The second and third digits represent a region in that group, such as a large city. To send mail, only the first five digits of the ZIP code are required.
ZIP Codes are numbered with the first digit representing a certain group of U.S. states, the second and third digits together representing a region in that group (or perhaps a large city) and the fourth and fifth digits representing a group of delivery addresses within that region.
To do this, you can do one of two things: Format the column as Text. Select your data range and press Ctrl+1 to launch the Format Cells dialog. On the Number tab, click Text. Use the apostrophe character. You can type an apostrophe () in front of the number, and Excel will treat it as text.
Apply Custom Format with Leading Zeros Select the cell in which you want to add zeros as a prefix. Right-click ➜ Format Option or you can also use the shortcut key Ctrl + 1 open Format Cell Dialog Box. In Category ➜ Select Custom. In the custom input dialog box, enter 0000000. Click OK.
In Excel, fortunately, you can use the CONCATENATE function to combine cells and keep the leading zeros. Select a blank cell, and type this formula =CONCATENATE(A1, B1,C1), press Enter key, then you can drag the autofill handle to fill this formula to the range you need.
