Unlike the usual XLSX files, however, individual spreadsheets in XLSB files are saved in BIFF12 binary file format. This is what the B in the extension means Excel binary workbook. A binary worksheet is a file in which all data is directly saved in binary format, i.e. as a series of ones and zeros.
xlsb) Binary File Format, which is a collection of records and structures that specify Excel workbook content. The content can include unstructured or semi-structured tables of numbers, text, or both numbers and text, formulas, external data connections, charts and images.
xlsb) saves the data within an Excel workbook in binary format instead of Extensible Markup Language (XML) format. Binary (i.e. 1s and 0s) is much more efficient that human-legible XML, so the result is a much smaller file size when saved on disk.
This can be done by right-clicking the Excel file and choosing Compressed (zipped) folder under the Send to tab.
XLSX files are stored in Open XML file format, and while youll only be able to read XLSX files on versions of Excel released in 2007 or later, XLSX files are, in fact, a compressed version of XML files. So XLSX files are usually going to be smaller than XLS files.
Performance: XLSB files are generally faster to open and save than XML-based formats like XLSX. This is especially noticeable with larger and more complex spreadsheets.
An XLSB file is an Excel binary workbook file. They store information in binary format instead of XML like with most other Excel files (e.g., XLSX). Since XLSB files are binary, they can be read from and written to much faster, making them extremely useful for very large spreadsheets.
Here are the steps to follow for zipping an Excel file: Open your file browser. Right-click on your Excel file. Navigate to Send to to toggle the side menu. Select Compressed (zipped) folder. Confirm you have the . zip file in your file browser.
