welcome back everyone im nick this channel is swiffle thinking where we cover all things swift and swift ui related and i hope you guys are getting used to publishers and subscribers by now because we have covered them in the past two videos if youre following along and although we covered them we didnt get into creating our own custom publishers and subscribers yet thats what were gonna do in this video so were going to start out very simply by actually creating a timer which we did in the last video except in the last video we did it in the view and in this video were going to create a view model and put our own custom timer in the view model and have the view of course update with that timer were then of course going to take it to the next level and were going to create some really custom publishers and subscribers that are going to be super useful when you guys make your applications i think by the end of this video youre gonna really start to see just how powerful this

At the heart of Combine is the Publisher protocol. This protocol defines the requirements for a type to be able to transmit a sequence of values over time to one or more subscribers.
The provider of the information is called a publisher . Publishers supply information about a subject without needing to know anything about the applications that are interested in the information. The consumer of the information is called a subscriber .
The Combine framework provides a declarative Swift API for processing values over time. These values can represent many kinds of asynchronous events. Combine declares publishers to expose values that can change over time, and subscribers to receive those values from the publishers.
The subscriber defines an associated type, Input , to declare the type that it receives. The publisher also defines a type, Output , to declare what it produces. The publisher and subscriber both define a type, Failure , to indicate the kind of error they produce or receive.
In Swift Combine, Publishers are a protocol describing an object which can transmit values over time. A Subject is an extended publisher which knows how to send imperatively. Neither Publisher nor Subject are concrete classes with implementation; they are both protocols.
Multicast() and share() are almost the same. The difference is shared() will create subscription when the first subscription subscibed, it causes the second subscription can miss some values if it is subscribed after value emitted.
In Combine, a Publisher produces elements, and a Subscriber acts on the elements it receives. However, a publisher cant send elements until the subscriber attaches and asks for them. The subscriber also controls the rate at which the publisher delivers elements, by using the Subscribers.
What is Combine? Combine was introduced as a new framework by Apple at WWDC-2019. It provides a declarative Swift API for processing values over time. The framework can be compared to frameworks like RxSwift and ReactiveSwift (formally known as ReactiveCocoa).
A subject is a publisher that you can use to inject values into a stream, by calling its send(:) method. This can be useful for adapting existing imperative code to the Combine model.
RxSwift supports iOS 9 and higher, while Combine requires iOS 13 and higher. Both frameworks are available on all Apple platforms, but Combine still lacks Linux support. OpenCombine can come to the rescue in these cases, featuring the same API but with an open-source implementation and support for more platforms.
