The delegate and protocol pattern in Swift facilitates one-to-one communication between views, such as a bottom sheet's view controller communicating with the main view controller. This enables the main view controller to update its UI when an iPhone button is tapped. The video is sponsored by Squarespace and includes a starter project to simplify understanding the concepts. The presenter describes a UI setup consisting of an image view, a label, and a button, focusing on the configuration of these UI elements. The overall aim is to clarify the delegate and protocol mechanism through practical application, emphasizing its importance in Swift development.

What is Combine? Combine was introduced as a new framework by Apple at WWDC-2019. It provides a declarative Swift API for processing values over time. The framework can be compared to frameworks like RxSwift and ReactiveSwift (formally known as ReactiveCocoa).
In ReactiveSwift, the completion from the mapped stream does not affect the outer stream and therefore when a new value is sent, a new inner stream is created. In Combine, when the inner stream completes, the whole stream also completes.
RxSwift and Combine are reactive programming solutions whose purpose is to handle asynchronous events. RxSwift is the most popular framework whereas Combine is Apples recently introduced built-in solution.
In contrast to RxSwift, Combine also allows subscribers to request more values at any time, resulting in backpressure support. So, rather than the publisher deciding when values are propagated, it is actually the subscriber demanding new values.
The Combine framework provides a declarative Swift API for processing values over time. These values can represent many kinds of asynchronous events. Combine declares publishers to expose values that can change over time, and subscribers to receive those values from the publishers.
Combine Subjects are thread safe whereas RxSwift Subjects are not. In RxSwift you rarely need Subjects anyway, in Combine you need them constantly.
In Apples words, Combine is: a declarative Swift API for processing values over time. Combine is Apples take on a functional reactive programming library, akin to RxSwift.
