OEM versus Contract Manufacturing (CM) Contract Manufacturing (CM) is a step beyond OEM. While an OEM may offer products to be customised or may otherwise guide and help in the product design stage, a CM is just that a manufacturer for hire.
An EMS provides electronics manufacturing services; an OEM is an original equipment manufacturer. CEMs are contract electronics manufacturers and ECM is an electronic contract manufacturer. A CM is a contract manufacturer and an ODM is an original design manufacturer.
The main difference is that contract manufacturing is a form of outsourcing to practice when you dont have access to the necessary resources to produce products. And outsourcing is usually a tactic to redistribute resources and help with cost savings and other economies of scale.
Simply put, an OEM contract manufacturer is an outsourced company that handles the creation of equipment the hiring company cannot make themselves. OEM contract services exist for virtually every industry and allow primary manufacturers to expand their product or service range with a minimum of extra expenditure.
Though many people often confuse the two terms and use them interchangeably, they certainly do not mean the same thing. OEMs build products based on designs provided to them from customers, while ODM manufacturers design some or all of the product themselves before manufacturing them for customers.
Contract manufacturers make it possible for companies with limited means or an overwhelming workload to outsource the manufacturing of products. They can provide specialized, technical manufacturing insights for companies that lack the internal resources or want to scale up faster than they can on their own.
The acronyms represent the different services that specific manufacturers offer within a broader manufacturing environment. An EMS provides electronics manufacturing services; an OEM is an original equipment manufacturer. CEMs are contract electronics manufacturers and ECM is an electronic contract manufacturer.
OEM Created by the Buyer but may have help or guidance from the manufacturer. ODM created by the supplier/factory. Contract Manufacturing created by the Buyers.
The document is a template of the ODM agreement concluded by retailers, brand owners or other buyers (the entrusting party) for the purpose of entrusting the suppliers to produce and manufacture the products through developing and using professional technologies.
ODM (Original Design Manufacturer) Since the ODM designed the product, it owns the rights to it. Example: Consumer electronics like phone cases and chargers are examples of ODM-created products, which are more common in the food industry (think of the term generic and store brand).
