When is it useful to collate? Collation is used in when printing multiple copies of a document that has multiple pages that need to be kept in order. Basically, your finished printing project will be comprised of multiple printed clones of your original multi-page document.
Collate means to collect and assemble printed sheets of paper within a predetermined order or sequence. Typically, all the pages in the document will print once. Once complete, the machine will repeat the process by printing a second set.
Collating Copies Choose Print from the File menu. Word displays the Print dialog box. (See Figure 1.) Specify the number of copies you wish to print. Click on the Collate Copies check box. If the check box is selected, this indicates the copies will be collated. Click on OK. Your document will be printed.
If you need 10 copies of an 8-page booklet, choosing to print collated will give you the 10 copies with the 8 pages already in order and ready to go. Alternately, printing uncollated would mean the opposite. Printing this same document uncollated will print the first page 10 times, the second page 10 times, and so on.
Collate printing is the action of taking multiple different printed pages and putting them together into a complete set. Collating is most common with color copies, as the copies can be collated without being bound together.
In printing lingo, collate is often used to mean collate copies. That means that instead of printing individual papers, the printer accumulates these documents together to create a complete set. The next time you are printing a document, check out the print preview page.
If you want each packet to print in the same order, collated printing would be your best bet. This way, collated printing would print pages one through five of the first packet before moving on to the second packet and so on. If something is uncollated, it means its compiled randomly or in an unspecified order.
Should I collate pages? You should use collated printing if you print more than one document copy. This will make it easier to keep each copy in a separate pile, and easier to bind them together later on.
The difference between collated and uncollated is that collated means every page of your print job is kept in order. An uncollated print job is made up of pages not in order.
Examples of printed items that are often collated include brochures, books, booklets, manuals, copies, and pamphlets.
