Apply a predefined postal code format to numbers Select the cell or range of cells that you want to format. On the Home tab, next to General, in the Number Format box. In the Format Cells dialog box, under Category, click Special. In the Type list, click Zip Code or Zip Code + 4.
Click on Data from the menu ribbon. Then click on Sort. A Sort Warning pop-up menu will appear. Leave Expand the selection default selected and click Sort.
In the field to the right of the first zip code in the list, type the following formula: =TEXT(,00000), where x is the cellname of the first zip code in the list. For example, if the Zip Code column is column F, and the first row of data is in row 2, you will type =TEXT(F2,00000).
