The good news is that the fix is fast and easy. To remove the fuzzies, give the deck a quick sanding. Thats it. All those fuzzy fibres will simply pop off easily after one quick pass of the sander.
This is caused by the tearing of the wood fibers. This is normal and does not indicate damage. These fuzzies will generally go away in 2 or 3 weeks.
For woods with fine and delicate grains, a clear oil or varnish can be ideal to accentuate these details without obscuring them. For denser woods or for a more rustic look, a tinted wax or varnish can be used to deepen the color and highlight the veins.
If your wood does get fuzzy, go down a grit or two with the sandpaper (120-grit is a good place to start) and sand out the little furs.
Method 1: Soak and Scrape. The soak-and-scrape method is most effective in removing texture when the walls have never been painted. Method 2: Apply a Skim Coat on Textured Walls. Smooth out textured painted walls by covering the texture in a joint compoundalso known as a skim coat. When to Call a Professional.
For the lint thats stuck in your stain already, I think the best you can do is bury it under finish coats. I would scuff sand after the first or second topcoat with a 325 mesh foam pad. Then vacuum well and then wipe it down with a clean microfiber cloth.
Fill the pores. sand it smooth. wipe it with a damp cloth, wait an hour then sand it again, or better yet, use a scraper. apply sanding sealer or oil or water-based filler, following the instructions. once dry, block sand the surface until flat. Apply finish - I like lacquer or oil finishes.
The best tools to remove this felting and make the texture smoother are Osborn brushes or Sashcos Buffy Pad system, both of which attach to a variable-speed grinder. Of course, random orbital sanders with 60- or 80-grit sandpaper will work, but they will be more time-consuming and dont always do as good a job.
