letamp;#39;s clear up some confusion about the need for an annual pap smear weamp;#39;re doing pap smears because weamp;#39;re looking for something specific weamp;#39;re looking for pre cancer and cancer of the cervix we are more prone to this pre-cancer called dysplasia when weamp;#39;re younger women so for younger women who have multiple partners who are not in monogamous relationships it is an excellent idea to have an annual pap smear once we get to be older women once weamp;#39;re in more monogamous relationships and once we have had three normal pap smears in a row we can extend the interval at which we get our pap smears because we are really less at risk for cervical cancer at that point however and most importantly you still need to have your annual visit because we are looking for other things in women as we grow older

What are the different types of abnormal results? Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) Low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) High-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) Atypical squamous cells, cannot exclude HSIL (ASC-H) Atypical glandular cells (AGC)
There are 3 main categories, some of which have sub-categories: Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy. Epithelial cell abnormalities. Other malignant neoplasms.
The irregular cells identified by Pap test results are classified as low grade or high grade. Low grade changes mean there are mild changes to the cells, and high grade changes indicate moderate to severe changes. These results help your doctor determine if further testing is needed.
Normal Pap test results: No abnormal cervical cells were found. A normal test result may also be called a negative test result or negative for intraepithelial lesion (area of abnormal growth) or malignancy.
Typically, your doctor will use the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure (LEEP), or perform a cold knife cone biopsy as a minor surgical procedure. Be sure to always bring up any questions you may about you Pap test with your gynecologist.
Class V usually meant cancer. Unfortunately, this class system led to confusion regarding what number pap smear a woman had and what that really meant. Recently, a new system for pap smear classification called the Bethesda System has been introduced.
An abnormal Pap test result rarely means cancer is present, especially in someone who has regular, annual Pap tests. An abnormal result means there are cells in the cervix that look unusual, which can be caused by yeast or bacterial infection, irritation, benign growths, hormonal changes, or pre-cancer.
Atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US): This is the most common abnormal Pap test finding. It means that some cells dont look completely normal, but its not clear if the changes are caused by HPV infection.
