alright letamp;#39;s talk about the art of embedding quotations okay first letamp;#39;s look at the anatomy of a quote this isnamp;#39;t even a real quote itamp;#39;s just what it might look like says this right here is a lot of context leading up to the quote and if the quote is actual dialogue the speaker the exact words youamp;#39;ve taken from the text citation hereamp;#39;s whatamp;#39;s in there first youamp;#39;ve got some context thatamp;#39;s leading up to the quote and thatamp;#39;s a background information then usually thereamp;#39;s gonna be a comma right before the quote begins after that you have the quote and it opens and ends with quotation marks that look like that and finally you have the citation which comes in parentheses after the quote so thatamp;#39;s all the pieces that go into embedding a quote your job is to find the art of avoiding a quote dump which looks like that thatamp;#39;s when you just dump your quote into the writing with no lead-in so h

Below are some common questions from our customers that may provide you with the answer you're looking for. If you can't find an answer to your question, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.

Changes to a quotation not requiring explanation Single quotation marks may be changed to double quotation marks and vice versa. Footnote or endnote number callouts can be omitted. Any other changes (e.g., italicizing words for emphasis or omitting words) must be explicitly indicated.
If incorrect spelling, grammar, or punctuation in the source might confuse readers, insert the word [sic], italicized and bracketed, immediately after the error in the quotation (American Psychological Association, 2020, p. 274). For example, they made theyre [sic] lunches.
Shortening a quote If you want to omit some words, phrases, or sentences from the quote to save space, use an ellipsis (. . .) with a space before and after it to indicate that some material has been left out. If the part you removed includes a sentence break, add a period before the ellipsis to indicate this.
Use brackets to show any changes made to quotations in order to retain grammatical correctness. Use brackets in quotes to add a word, prefix, or suffix in order to fit the quote into your sentence. Use brackets to change the tense of a verb in a quote so that it will fit into your sentence.
About Block Quotes Any quotation containing 40 or more words should be formatted as a Block Quote. Do not use quotation marks to enclose block quotations. Place period at the end of the quote rather than after the citation. Block quotes should start on a new line and indent the block about inch from the left margin.
Place brackets around any words you add to clarify. The brackets might replace unclear words (e.g. it, them, this, they) or add context to the quote. Brackets tell the reader that you have added your own words, but have not changed the meaning of the original quote.
General Guidelines for Indirect Quote As a general rule, you should try to avoid using indirect quotes. If you use an indirect quote, include the source it originated from in your parenthetical citation, followed by the words as cited in and then the source you obtained it from.
Audio: When youre writing in APA style, you will use the past tense to discuss what the author of a source said or did. This is a rule that may be different from other writing styles you may have used in the past, but in APA, we always use past tense to communicate actions from a source.
