Start by considering your intro paragraph and, on a separate piece of paper, write out your thesis statement. This should act as the guide to the rest of the outline: each body paragraph should somehow logically correspond to your thesis. Next, go through each body paragraph and summarize it in one to two sentences.
To create an outline: Place your thesis statement at the beginning. List the major points that support your thesis. Label them in Roman numerals (I, II, III, etc.). List supporting ideas or arguments for each major point. If applicable, continue to sub-divide each supporting idea until your outline is fully developed.
Outlines give a visual structure to your work and are used to show relationships and hierarchies within your content. To outline, you must create a linear, organized plan for your paper that shows the main ideas that you will discuss as well as their relationships within the paper.
Reverse outlining is exactly what it sounds like: a process whereby you take away the supporting writing and are left with a papers main points or main ideas, sometimes represented by the papers topic sentences.
Follow the steps below to turn your outline into the first draft of your essay. Step 1: Figure out your main points and create the headings for your outline. Step 2: Add your supporting ideas. Step 3: Turn your headings and subheadings into complete sentences. Step 4: Construct your paragraphs.
How do I write an outline? Identify your topic or thesis statement. Decide what points you would like to discuss during your paper. Put your points in logical, numerical order so that each point connects back to your main point. Write possible transitions between paragraphs.
How to Create and Use a Reverse Outline Start a new document or use a blank piece of paper. List the main idea of each paragraph, working systematically through the entire paper. Number your outline for ease of reference. Edit your writing, expanding or condensing passages to achieve greater concision and clarity.
How to create a reverse outline Start with a complete draft to have a fuller picture of the plan you carried out. Construct the outline by listing the main idea of each paragraph in your draft in a blank document. Number your list for ease of reference.
