In Excel, details matter. If you have minor inconsistencies in your data, it can actually cause major problems later on. For example, I have a list of salespeople and each one falls into one of four regions: North, South, East, or West. But, if you look closely, you can see that a couple of the values are a little bit different. It looks like North is misspelled, and West is also missing an E, and believe it or not, these small differences might actually cause us to get the wrong result with certain formulas or pivot tables. Now, since we have about 300 salespeople, finding all of the inconsistencies would be like finding a needle in a haystack. One solution that may work for you depending on the environment you consume the csv, you can add a nonnumeric character to the beginning and end (e.g. a ) of the values. This will force Excel to recognize it as text.
To preserve all the digits in text-formatted numbers, you have to import the downloaded CSV file as raw data into a new Excel spreadsheet, set the column datatypes as needed, and then save the new file as an Excel workbook. Excel (XLSX) files will preserve these formats, CSV files wont.
Method 1: Format the cell as text Right-click target cell, and then click Format Cells. On the Number tab, select Text, and then click OK. Then type a long number. ( Be sure to set the cell format before you type the number) If you dont want to see the warning arrows, click the small arrow, and then click Ignore Error.
Use the apostrophe character You can type an apostrophe () in front of the number, and Excel will treat it as text.
This will tell Excel to treat your numbers as text and not apply any formatting. 3. You can adjust some of Excels AutoFormat options by going to File Options Proofing AutoCorrect Options AutoFormat As You Type and unchecking the boxes for the auto formatting you want to disable.
Open the file using the Excel Text Import Wizard When you open the CSV or TXT, tab or comma-delimited file, use the Excel Text Import Wizard. Make sure to select the column type as Text for the UPC column. Once the file is open, select the column and format it as Text before you save it as CSV again.
