hi students welcome to my lesson today so weamp;#39;re gonna be talking about motif and symbol both of these things are literary tools and elements of literature and theyamp;#39;re very connected but thereamp;#39;s also some defining features that make them different so first a symbol weamp;#39;ve seen this before we talked about this a symbol is a physical object or thing that stands for a larger abstract concept itamp;#39;s important to note that the concept it stands for must be abstract itamp;#39;s not a physical thing that stands for another physical thing that would be something more similar to a metaphor it has to stand for something that is not tangible symbols only occur once or twice in a story as in a symbol only appear once or twice there can be thousands of symbols in a story but youamp;#39;ll only see it usually once or twice but when thereamp;#39;s a series of related images or symbols that becomes a motif so a motif is a symbol action idea or collection of relat

What is a motif in literature? A motif is an object, image, sound, or phrase that is repeated throughout a story to point toward the storys larger theme.
Lesson Summary. A motif is a recurring symbol. It is a common literary device that helps to establish a theme or mood. Motifs can be almost anything: a repeated quote like in Fight Club, an object like in Lord of the Flies, or a theme like in The Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Types of Motifs Symbolic Motifs: These motifs take the form of symbols that represent a larger idea or theme. Conceptual Motifs: These motifs are built around a particular concept or idea that recurs in the story. Structural Motifs: These motifs are repeated patterns or structures in the story.
The thin, pale artist with shaking hands began to re-teach himself how to draw, exercising his skill with daily practice. He would often warm up his fingers by drawing a series of motifs in the upper right-hand corner of the paper: wavy line, zig zag, straight line, circle, spiral, half circle, and S-curve.
Some examples Geometric, typically repeated: Meander, palmette, rosette, gul in Oriental rugs, acanthus, egg and dart, Bead and reel, Pakudos, Swastika, Adinkra symbols. Figurative: Master of Animals, confronted animals, velificatio, Death and the Maiden, Three hares, Sheela na gig, puer mingens.
A motif can highlight something about a character, to help us understand them better, or it can help to establish the mood of the story. Often, motifs reinforce the themes of the story.
If your theme is the erosion of ethics and morality, some examples of motifs might be things like clothes that become more and more tattered, or a garden that slowly falls into ruin. You can use physical objects as a motif or a more abstract idea, like decay.
