Hello thanks, Iamp;#39;m Charlie Becker I work for the Virginia Department of Forestry as the utilization and marketing manager working with forest industry and landowners, finding markets for trees in Virginia. Today weamp;#39;re going to talk a little bit about markets and grading the lumber and logs. The reason for doing this is that you get the best money out of your logs and the best products you need to know the quality of the wood in it and what the markets need with who you sell it to. This usually involves knowing the type of species you have the size of the trees you have and the quality. In most cases for most trees the lower part of the tree has the highest quality wood and the most clear wood. This is because in most cases it has lost the branches first and the wood has grown over giving it the most amount of clear wood. And for most commercial uses of lumber to clear the boards the better it is. So normally is what we do is measure from the bottom up to where we start f

Scaling is the determination of the gross and net volume of logs. The primary purpose of scaling is to determine the volume by product or species that will be charged at a predetermined rate, also known as scaling for payment.
MEASURING THE DIAMETER OF A LOG Read the scale stick directly from the end of the log, not obliquely from the side. The diameter of a log is always measured inside the bark. This measurement is called diameter inside of bark or d.i.b. Use a log scale stick to measure the d.i.b. at the small end of the log.
The three most common rules are the Doyle, Scribner Decimal C and International 1/4 -inch. Figure 1 displays the differences between the amount of lumber that can be sawn from a log versus the estimated scale for the rules discussed.
There are several common methods for estimating the volume of wood available in a log. These include board-foot scaling, cubic volume scaling, weight scaling and electronic scanning.
The Doyle and International Rules are termed formula rules. That is, the values are obtained by formula. The Scribner Rule is called a diagram rule because the original numbers were derived by fitting boards into perfect circles representing the ends of logs.
Log Grading Procedures Measure the average small-end diameter, inside the bark. For oval shapes, average two diameter measurements taken at tight angles to each other - the same procedure as in log scaling.
