If your manual car wont easily shift into first gear, it can be due to a clutch that doesnt completely release, a warped clutch disc, a pilot bearing that keeps the transmission input shaft rotating even with the clutch disengaged, or a problem with the 1-2 gear synchronizer. Why Your Manual Car Wont Go Into First Gear - CarParts.com CarParts.com blog why-your-manual-car CarParts.com blog why-your-manual-car
Transmission Fluid Low or Poor Condition Vehicles low on transmission fluid or that are operating with worn out or contaminated fluid are likely to experience hard shift conditions. Lack of adequate lubrication within the transmission can cause several problems, including hard shifting.
Hard, and sometimes impossible shifting into first and reverse is caused by the clutch disc not moving away from the spinning flywheel. This is commonly referred to as the clutch is not releasing. The number one cause is the hydraulic system that operates the clutch is leaking and has low fluid. My manual transmission is hard to shift into first and reverse, why? If the clutch isnt fully disengaging when you press the clutch pedal, it can make it difficult to shift into gear. This could be due to low clutch fluid levels, a problem with the clutch linkage or cable (if its a mechanical clutch), or issues with the hydraulic system (if its a hydraulic clutch).
What might be causing this? Clutch problems. Juddering in first gear is usually caused by wear or a pressure plate problem in your cars clutch. Any leaks in the system may also get onto the surface of the clutch plate, which could also be the culprit. Your vehicle could have dirty fuel injectors, a damaged fuel pump, a blocked catalytic converter, a faulty mass airflow sensor, broken spark plugs, or even an accumulation of moisture. The main reason the car wont go into gear is that the level of car transmission fluid in the vehicle is lower or higher than the required limit. If the level is low despite regular maintenance, there may be a leak. Whereas, excessive transmission fluid may result in trouble shifting gears and gear slippage.
