During normal driving, on a level road, EGTs should be in the 600 to 800-degree range. A lower cruising EGT can be a great indicator of getting good fuel economy. Even during normal driving, exhaust gas temperature is a value that can tell you how efficiently your engine is working at a given moment, gear, and speed.
High EGTs do not represent a threat to engine life. When adjusting power settings and mixture, it is important to pay close attention to CHT because it is the best representation of stress on the engine.
To diagnose a faulty exhaust gas temperature sensor, consider the following steps: Conduct an electronic test and read any fault codes using a diagnostic tool. Inspect the connectors for signs of corrosion or loose connections. Check the wiring for any breaks or damage that could cause a short to the ground.
Generally speaking, these options can be considered good for cleaning the surface of the sensor: soap and water. hydrogen peroxide disinfectants 3%-5% Isopropyl alcohol
Common causes of exhaust gas temperature sensor failure is exposure to excessively high temperatures over 900C in some cases, the very thing they protect other components from.
Commonly, diesel performance enthusiasts will ask: Whats a safe EGT? The short answer is anything sustained below 1350 degrees Fahrenheit is acceptable by most OEM standards so long as your other engine temperatures remain within safe boundaries.
If there has been a build-up of contaminants on the sensor, it may be possible to clean it. This can be performed with a dry cloth.
Jack up the car so you can access the oxygen sensors. Spray the sensors with WD-40 and unscrew them with a wrench to remove the sensors from the vehicle. Fill an industrial plastic container with gasoline and place the sensors inside. Cover the container and let the sensors soak overnight.
