For 1 to 2 weeks, your knee is likely to be swollen and stiff, and you may need to take painkillers. Your surgeon or GP will advise about the type of pain relief thats best for you. Youll be advised to raise your leg as much as possible for example, by putting pillows under your heel when youre lying in bed.
Patients with more labor-intensive jobs are advised to wait 46 months before returning to work. Typically, patients can return to all normal activities within 812 weeks of surgery. However, athletes may not be cleared to return to sports for 6 months to a year after surgery to avoid the risk of re-injury.
PTs will typically have their patients perform certain tests at 6 weeks, 12 weeks, 6 months, and 9 months after surgery. These tests let your physical therapist know that you are progressing well and regaining knee function after the surgery. For most people, full recovery can happen rather quickly.
The timeline for ACL sprain recovery can vary depending on the severity of the injury and individual factors such as age, overall health, and adherence to rehabilitation protocols. In general, it takes around 6 to 9 months to fully recover from an ACL sprain.
The initial pain and swelling from an ACL injury usually eases up on its own within a few weeks. However, a person may continue to experience a feeling of instability in the knee while walking or attempting other activities.
Some people have minimal to no pain, minimal swelling and feel like they could play, but be careful. The typical symptoms of an ACL tear or injury include: A loud popping sound at the moment of injury.
It is not uncommon for patients to feel better 2-3 days after the injury when the pain and swelling starts to subside.
Without treatment, the swelling and pain in the knee generally subside over a period of several weeks; however, knee instability may often persist. Instability can limit the persons ability to participate in athletics and even do normal, daily activities.
